From WFD2015 to Swaziland: news about FOOD SECURITY.

blog food sec 1As we promised you last week, during the celebration of World Food Day 2015 on 16th October, here we are sharing with you all our activities about Food Security.

The Caritas Swaziland Food Security and Rural Development Programme (FSRDP) has been in existence since 1985. Its main goal has been to assist vulnerable populations within Swaziland to have greater access to sustainable livelihoods.

It has been doing this by improving sustainable agricultural production through better agriculture practices and animal husbandry.

blog food sec 2At the same time, we work with hundreds of rural families building the capacity to manage local natural resources and improve their economic coping strategies, including “Savings and Internal lending communities schemes”. All the activities of the Food Security and Rural Development Programme are implemented to make these rural families more resilient to external shocks.

Swaziland Integrated Livelihoods Programme

 image002The project goal is “Vulnerable populations within Swaziland have greater access to sustainable livelihoods.” The project aims to do this by improving sustainable agricultural production while building the capacity of rural families to better manage local natural resources and improve their economic coping strategies (including Savings and Internal Lending Communities – SILC) to make them more resilient to external shocks.  However, improved food security alone does not necessarily correlate to improved health status.  The project therefore also seeks to promote healthy behaviors by improving nutritional knowledge and hygiene practices and reinforcing key HIV and TB prevention messages amongst beneficiaries.

(SILC) Savings and Internal lending Communities Project

This is a report highlighting activities being carried out by the development department in a particular project called SILC (Savings and Internal Lending Communities). The Swaziland Integrated Livelihoods Project under the Food Security Program implements many developmental projects, but the scope of this report only focuses on the SILC project and on interventions particular to the Lubombo and Lower Shiselweni Region.

Food03Arriving at the Bishop’s house in Manzini (Swaziland) I found lots of seedlings. I did not know what and who they were for. Too many for our garden…! I then came to know they are the first of three more consignments part of a project run by Caritas: The Swaziland integrated Livelihoods Project (SILP)

The SILP is a comprehensive approach for improving food security amongst the most Vulnerable Swazi populations in the Lubombo and the lower Shiselweni regions.
